Congratulations on the birth of your child! Now that you have brought your child into the world, it is time to bring him or her into the family of God to begin a journey of faith life that is filled with God's grace and blessings.
This is how Canon Law describes the Sacrament of Baptism:
"Baptism, the gateway to the sacraments and necessary for salvation by actual reception or at least by desire, is validly conferred only by a washing of true water with the proper form of words. Through baptism men and women are freed from sin, are reborn as children of God, and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated into the Church."  (Can. 849)

Baptism, the first of the Sacraments, calls us into the family of God as His adopted sons and daughters, imparting upon those who are baptized the grace of being cleansed from original sin.  In the dying and rising to new life that is the drama of baptism, the individual is freed from the bonds of sin and death and given the promise of new life.
"Parents are obliged to take care that infants are baptized in the first few weeks; as soon as possible after the birth or even before it, they are to go to the pastor to request the sacrament for their child and to be prepared properly for it." (CC867.1)

To help you in the preparation of this important event, we have prepared several documents, with links, for you on our website. We encourage you to read them and to note any questions you may have to discuss during your Baptismal Class.
